For most dog owners, a game of fetch is the perfect way to keep their furry friend happy and active.

However, experts are now warning that this seemingly harmless game could pose serious health risks to dogs, especially when sticks are involved.

Beth Nash, a dog expert from the pet probiotic company Vitasure, explained that while many dogs love chasing and chewing on sticks, the habit can lead to potentially life-threatening injuries.

“If your dog loves to chow down on them, that’s when serious issues can arise,” she said.

The Dangers of Sticks: From Splinters to Toxicity

Chewing on sticks might seem like a natural behavior for dogs, but it can cause a range of problems:

  • Internal Injuries: Splintered wood can puncture or tear a dog’s esophagus, stomach, or intestines, leading to severe pain and even emergency surgery.
  • Dental Damage: Hard sticks can fracture teeth, cause gum injuries, and lead to costly dental infections.
  • Choking Hazards: Small pieces of wood can become lodged in a dog’s throat, blocking their airway.
  • Toxicity Risks: Certain tree barks, such as black walnut and cherry, contain toxins that can harm dogs if ingested.

While serious injuries from sticks are relatively rare, they can happen to any dog, regardless of size.

Smaller dogs are more prone to choking, while larger breeds can carry bigger sticks that may cause more damage if chewed.

How to Safely Play Fetch with Your Dog

Instead of using sticks, experts recommend safer alternatives like rubber balls, Frisbees, or dog-safe fetch toys. These options are less likely to splinter or cause injury if chewed.

Teaching your dog the “leave it” command can also help prevent them from picking up dangerous objects. This skill is not only useful for sticks but also for avoiding other potential hazards on walks.

Beth Nash advises, “While it can be dangerous for dogs of all sizes, taking simple steps to redirect their attention to safer toys can make all the difference.”

Check Your Dog’s Health: What to Look For

To ensure your dog is in good health, pay attention to their digestion.

Healthy dogs typically produce regular, solid stools of a good color.

If your dog is eating non-food items like sticks, it could also be a sign of a nutritional deficiency, so make sure their diet meets their breed’s specific needs.
