While chewing is a natural behavior for dogs, some bones can pose serious health risks, including choking, digestive blockages, and internal injuries.

Why Bones Can Be Dangerous for Dogs

Dr. Amir Anwary, an animal expert who frequently shares pet care advice online, recently posted a TikTok video highlighting the risks associated with giving dogs bones.

As a vet, he does not recommend feeding bones to dogs, stating that they offer no significant health benefits and can actually be harmful.

While many dog owners continue to give bones as treats, Anwary aims to educate them on which types to avoid.

The Worst Bones to Give Your Dog

🔹 Cooked Bones – Cooking changes the structure of bones, making them brittle and prone to splintering. When dogs chew on them, they can break into sharp pieces that may cause internal injuries or blockages.

🔹 Turkey and Chicken Bones – These small, fragile bones are particularly dangerous, as they can easily splinter and get lodged in a dog’s throat or digestive tract, leading to severe complications.

🔹 Pork Bones – Pork bones are notorious for splintering, presenting a significant choking hazard. They can also break into jagged pieces, risking internal damage.

🔹 Sharp-Edged Bones – Some bones, such as lamb chops, may have dangerously sharp edges that could injure a dog’s mouth, throat, or stomach.

What Should Dog Owners Do?

Dr. Anwary strongly advises dog owners to avoid giving their pets any of these bones and to consider safer alternatives, such as vet-approved chew toys or specially designed dog treats.

If a dog accidentally consumes a dangerous bone, owners should monitor them closely for signs of distress, including vomiting, difficulty swallowing, or lethargy, and seek veterinary attention immediately.
