Catnip, also known as catmint, is a hardy and easy-to-grow plant that thrives in a variety of environments.

Some even call it “poor man’s lavender” due to its fragrant, purple blooms. Its botanical name is Nepeta, and it’s one of the most low-maintenance plants found in Scandinavian gardens.

Catnip is a favorite among bees and butterflies, making it a perfect choice if you want to bring a bit of life and buzzing energy to your garden.

Caring for Catnip

Catnip has only one real requirement: sunlight. Plant it in a sunny spot, and you’ll almost certainly see it flourish.

With proper care, it can bloom from June to September. Just remember to trim off the spent flowers regularly to encourage new growth.

Its soft, blue-gray leaves appear in early spring, and by late May, the lovely lavender-colored blossoms begin to bloom.

Alongside its beauty, long blooming period, and ease of care, catnip has another bonus—it’s beloved by cats.

Catnip and Your Cat

Many house cats are drawn to catnip because of a natural compound it contains called nepetalactone.

This substance triggers a strong response in most cats, often making them playful, energetic, or, in some cases, calm and mellow. Interestingly, about 25% of cats are unaffected due to a genetic variation.

Catnip is commonly added to toys to make them more appealing and to stimulate a cat’s hunting instincts. When a toy contains catnip—usually labeled clearly—it often becomes an instant favorite.

Why Do Cats Love Catnip?

Recent studies suggest that nepetalactone affects cats in a way that’s somewhat similar to how marijuana affects humans.

When a cat inhales the scent, it often experiences a short-lived but euphoric “high.” Some cats may even seem addicted—but don’t worry, the effect is completely harmless.

Catnip doesn’t cause any lasting damage to your cat, and it’s safe for both pets and people. In short, planting catnip in your garden isn’t just easy—it’s rewarding for you, your garden, and your furry friend.
