Dogs thrive on daily exercise and activity, but it shouldn’t be too much or too little. An adult dog without any ailments or diseases can walk between five and 30 kilometers a day depending on the breed, size, and pace. If you’re walking at a slow pace with breaks and water, most dogs can walk more than 20 kilometers in a day.

Puppies can walk much less. A general recommendation is to walk your puppy for 10-15 minutes at a time two or three times a day.

How Far Can You Walk a Puppy

If you’re about to get a puppy, it’s important to provide the right amount of exercise. A good rule of thumb is to walk the dog twice a day for the equivalent of its age in months multiplied by five minutes. This means that if you have a three-month-old puppy, you can walk it for 15 minutes twice a day. When the puppy is five months old, the duration will be 25 minutes twice a day.

You should be aware that puppies can vary significantly during walks. If you have a very cautious puppy that spends most of the time sniffing, looking around, and sitting down, you can walk it for more than 15 minutes. Conversely, if you have a puppy that runs around and pulls on the leash, you should stick to the 15 minutes.

Why Should You Limit Puppies’ Exercise?

Very young puppies experience rapid growth and develop from day to day. This also means that the puppy’s body is not yet mature or strong enough for long walks.

When walking your puppy, you should especially avoid monotonous exercise on hard surfaces. This includes long stretches on asphalt or sidewalks. The surface and repetitive movements can be harsh on the puppy, potentially negatively impacting the development of tendons and joints.

How Far Can You Walk an Adult Dog

Large, healthy dogs can walk very far if the pace is moderate and they have access to water. Small dogs can also walk relatively far under these conditions but will often tire more quickly than larger dogs. Under the right conditions, most healthy adult dogs can walk up to 30 kilometers a day.

Other Ways to Engage Your Dog Besides Walking

If you don’t want to walk too far with your dog—or if your own legs are starting to get a bit sore—there are fortunately other methods to engage your dog.

While exercise is good for dogs, walks alone don’t provide sufficient stimuli. The dog should also be challenged mentally. Here are three ideas you can use for inspiration:

  • Training

Dogs love being challenged, and you should take advantage of this. You can train your dog in various ways. Teach it tricks, obedience, and rules. By leveraging your dog’s love for challenges through training, you’ll also strengthen your cooperation. Additionally, it’s a very effective way to tire the dog out.

  • Play

Play is also an effective way to engage dogs. You can play with everything from balls to tug ropes, giving yourself a break from the long walks in the process.

  • Search and Track

A really fun and effective way to engage your dog is to “track.” This can be done in multiple ways. For example, you can place treats in a straight line with distance between each treat. Then it’s the dog’s task to find the treats – remember to add a good reward at the end of the track. As the dog becomes more experienced, you can increase the distance between treats, raising the level of difficulty.

What is the Minimum Requirement for Exercising Dogs?

Now you know how far a dog can walk at most. But what is the minimum requirement for exercising dogs? For healthy, adult dogs, it is recommended that the dog is activated for at least 20 to 30 minutes twice daily. Additionally, the dog should ideally have at least 30 minutes of vigorous physical activity.

Be aware that older dogs or dogs with ailments often have a lower activity level.

Why Do Dogs Need Exercise?

Dogs that are engaged, exercised, and stimulated will generally be happier, more obedient, and function better physically, mentally, and socially. Lack of exercise and stimulation often leads to anxiety, frustration, and restlessness in dogs.

Exercise also helps keep the dog healthy and strong. With the right diet and good exercise daily, the dog will have a significantly lower risk of obesity and various illnesses.
