The Man, the Machine, and a Hopeless Dog

A man made a heroic attempt to teach his golden retriever how to use an automatic ball launcher. The result turned into an unintended comedy, leaving the internet in stitches.

A Hopeless Attempt

Katie Row from San Diego, California, captured the hilarious moment when her husband tried to teach their one-year-old golden retriever to operate a ball launcher all by herself.

The clip, which quickly went viral on TikTok, shows the man repeatedly demonstrating the seemingly simple act of placing the ball into the machine—only to discover the task was far too complex for the pup.

Even when the owner tried to show his dog the technique by using his mouth to place the ball in the launcher, it made no impression on the confused golden retriever, who simply watched the ball with no sign of understanding.

A Battle With Dog Logic

In the most hopeless moment of the video, the dog holds the ball directly over the launcher with his mouth—without ever letting it go. Katie Row, who filmed the scene from inside the house, could barely stop laughing at her husband’s endless patience and the dog’s unwavering lack of cooperation.

But her husband didn’t give up. He placed the ball in different places around the machine to clearly indicate where the ball definitely shouldn’t go. The dog’s gaze, however, remained stubbornly fixed on the ball rather than on the instructions.

The Internet’s New Hero

Since the video was shared on June 14, it has been viewed more than 795,200 times and racked up over 67,300 likes. Comments are pouring in, praising the owner’s immense patience. One user humorously commented: “A golden retriever (the man) trying to teach a golden retriever (the dog).”

Although the dog did finally manage to get the ball into the machine on her own—just once—Katie Row says there’s still a long way to go before the pup gets the hang of it.

Until then, the internet has yet another delightful reason to laugh—and a new hero to admire for his admirable perseverance.
