Skoda Says Dogs Prefer EVs — But Can They Prove It?
Can dogs really have a preference for electric vehicles (EVs) over gas and diesel cars?
According to Czech automaker Skoda, the answer is yes.
The company recently conducted an experiment suggesting that dogs experience less stress when traveling in electric cars—but not everyone is convinced.
A Single Dog Study Raises Eyebrows
The study was conducted using a one-year-old Cocker Spaniel named Mango, who was placed in three different Skoda models: an electric Skoda Elroq, a gasoline-powered car, and a diesel model.
Mango was driven at speeds up to 110 km/h (68 mph) at Dunsfold Aerodrome, famously used by Top Gear.
During the test, Mango’s heart rate was monitored to measure stress levels. The results showed that his resting heart rate increased:
- Electric car (EV) – from 80 to 100 beats per minute
- Gasoline car – 120 beats per minute
- Diesel car – 125 beats per minute
According to Skoda, these results indicate that the noise and vibrations from combustion engines create a more stressful environment for dogs, while the quieter, smoother ride of an EV allows them to relax—even dozing off in some cases.

Experts Weigh In on the Findings
To support their claim, Skoda consulted veterinarian Scott Miller and dog behavior specialist Anna Webb.
Miller stated that “the absence of engine noise, gear shifts, and vibrations in electric cars creates a calmer environment for dogs.”
Webb also observed that Mango appeared visibly more relaxed in the EV, lying down with half-closed eyes, while in the gas and diesel cars, he showed signs of anxiety, such as rapid head movements and visible eye whites.
But Is the Study Reliable?
While the idea is intriguing, experts caution against taking the results too seriously. Several issues with Skoda’s study raise doubts:
🐶 Sample Size: The study was conducted on just one dog, which is far from enough to draw scientific conclusions.
🚗 No Control Group: There was no comparison with other dogs to see if Mango’s reaction was typical or unique to him.
👨⚕️ Potential Bias: The study was conducted by Skoda, a company that benefits from promoting EVs, raising concerns about objectivity.
📊 Lack of Peer Review: Scientific studies usually undergo independent review by other experts before being accepted, which has not happened here.
So, Do Dogs Really Prefer EVs?
While the idea that electric cars may be more comfortable for dogs is plausible, more rigorous studies are needed.
Until then, pet owners should focus on creating a stress-free travel experience for their furry friends—regardless of the car they drive!
