Golden Retriever Gets First Solo Day at Home: What She Does Goes Viral
Hazel is seen cautiously exploring her Boston apartment, making sure the coast is clear.
Boston couple hoped their seven-month-old Golden Retriever, Hazel, would handle her first solo day without a crate like a champ.
Instead, she gave them, and millions on Instagram, a lesson in just how mischievous a pup can be when left to her own devices.
Caught on a pet camera, Hazel’s antics quickly went viral, racking up over 1.1 million views and 20,000 likes in just four days.
Chewing, Chaos, and a Quick Course Correction
In the video posted to her Instagram account @hazel_onthehill, Hazel is seen cautiously exploring her Boston apartment, making sure the coast is clear.
Once she realizes no one’s watching, at least not visibly, she sinks her teeth into the corner of the TV stand.
But her fun doesn’t last long. Her owners, watching remotely, use the pet cam’s speaker to say “no”, and it works.
Hazel jumps back, startled, and rethinks her behavior.

Lesson Learned… Kind Of
Hazel’s owner told Newsweek they thought she might stay calm if she believed she was truly alone.
“She usually chews to get attention, so we assumed that wouldn’t happen if she didn’t think we were around,” they said.
After the warning through the camera, Hazel climbed onto the couch and took a nap, redeeming herself slightly. Still, she hasn’t totally grown out of the habit.
“Subsequent attempts were similar,” the owner admitted. “But we’re taking small steps. We don’t want to rush it, we want her to get used to being alone gradually.”
Hazel may not be ready for total freedom yet, but thanks to her adorable mischief and a well-timed camera catch, she’s become an online sensation, and a relatable reminder that puppy parenting is always a work in progress.
