Apples are delicious, juicy, crunchy, and rich in vitamins, attracting both humans and dogs. While humans can safely consume apples in their entirety (including the core), it’s important to be more cautious when offering this sweet treat to your four-legged friend.

Dogs can also benefit from the vitamins found in this inviting, fresh fruit. The freshness, taste, and texture attract our pets in the same way apples appeal to us humans.

The delightful and flavorful fruit, particularly popular in places like Denmark, is rich in vitamins C and K, which strengthen the immune system. This effect is similar for both humans and dogs. Dogs can safely consume the flesh of apples, making them a fresh, healthy, and enjoyable snack for your pet.

However, you should be cautious when your dog is near apple trees with fallen fruit on the ground. There’s nothing wrong if your hungry dog digs into the apple flesh and eats it. It’s only the apple flesh that your dog can safely consume.

The apple core is unhealthy, and you must ensure that your pet does not ingest the small seeds. This applies regardless of the season or the apple variety.

Apple seeds contain cyanide, a natural compound that can be toxic in larger amounts. Cyanide is present in all apple seeds, regardless of the variety.

Is It Dangerous for My Dog to Eat Apple Seeds?

In the smallest doses, nothing usually happens if your dog eats a few apple seeds. When your pet is already healthy, its immune system and digestive system will quickly expel the toxins.

If your dog happens to eat several whole apples, there is a reason to monitor your pet’s condition and well-being.

Too much cyanide will lead to stomach pain and digestive issues.

In most cases, your dog will satisfy its craving before the cyanide intake becomes too high.

In the worst case, it can lead to breathing difficulties, dizziness, vomiting, and coma if your dog has ingested a large amount of cyanide.

My Dog Has Eaten Apple Seeds – What Should I Do?

As a dog owner, you primarily control what your dog consumes. You can safely share an apple with your four-legged friend, making sure to cut the fruit into manageable ‘slices’ or segments.

If you caught your dog having free access to fallen apples, be extra vigilant. It’s difficult to know how many apples (and thus cores) your dog has eaten.

Your dog usually won’t distinguish between the flesh and the core. Therefore, it might often consume the entire apple.

If it has only eaten one apple, no significant harm will occur. Typically, no reaction related to stomach pain will arise in this regard.

However, if your pet has eaten several apples, it may result in physical symptoms. You should monitor your dog over the following hours and watch for any changes in behavior.

If it starts whimpering, pacing restlessly, or vomiting, these are signs of toxicity.

It is recommended to contact your veterinarian to get your pet examined and treated if deemed necessary.
