Loggerhead Turtle Saved from Danish Beach Finds Home at Aquarium

A stranded loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) discovered on a Danish beach in January has been given a second chance at life.

After an extensive rehabilitation process, Denmark’s Environmental Protection Agency has granted permission for the turtle to stay at Den Blå Planet, the country’s national aquarium.

The turtle is now swimming in the large Ocean Tank, delighting visitors while also contributing to conservation efforts.

From the Brink of Death to a Safe Haven

A German tourist made the surprising discovery in late January while walking along the beach near Hvide Sande.

The turtle was severely weakened and suffering from cold shock.

Working with the Fisheries and Maritime Museum in Esbjerg, experts transported the turtle to Copenhagen, where veterinarians and caregivers worked around the clock to stabilize its condition.

A microchip embedded under the turtle’s skin revealed that it had previously been stranded in France and released back into the wild.

However, since this was its second time washing ashore, experts suspect it has trouble navigating and would struggle to survive if released again.

More Strandings Along the Danish Coast

Recently, an increasing number of sea turtles have been found stranded along Denmark’s western coastline.

Unfortunately, most have either been found dead or died shortly after being rescued.

While the exact reasons remain unclear, Den Blå Planet is collaborating with researchers from Aalborg University to investigate the causes, which may be linked to climate change and shifts in ocean currents.

“Every stranded sea turtle gives us valuable insight,” says Lars Skou Olsen, curator at Den Blå Planet.

“We are working with researchers to understand why strandings are becoming more frequent and how changes in the marine environment may be affecting these turtles. This knowledge is crucial for improving conservation efforts.”
